The Food Bank is operated by the Grace Community Foundation, a 501 (c)3 organization whose mission is to reduce hunger in downtown Allentown by providing supplemental food and humanitarian services to inner city residents.
Founded by Rev. Donald H. Knapp, the former rector at Grace Episcopal Church located at 108 N. 5th Street. It started small—literally—in a closet at the church, where food was stored. Church members and Rev. Knapp contributed their own money to purchase limited amounts of food for struggling community members in downtown Allentown. The food bank grew from there. During the 1970s & 1980s, community needs increased. Word spread about the food bank and downtown residents flocked to Grace Church for assistance. The food bank operations expanded: Soon Grace Church was serving hundreds of families each month.
In 1994, Rev. Knapp retired from Grace Church, and at the same time, the thriving food bank recognized the need to form its own nonprofit, separate from the church. The Grace Community Foundation was born. In 1997, a dedicated volunteer, Patty McNamara, took over full-time operations and has run the food bank since that time. The Food Bank is open on Fridays, 9 to 11 a.m. and the third and fourth Saturdays, 9 to 11 a.m. and is located at Hadesty Hall in the basement of Grace Episcopal Church.
The mission of Communities In Schools [CIS] is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
CIS works to ensure that every child has these “five basics”: a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult, a safe place to learn and grow, a healthy start and a healthy future, a marketable skill to use upon graduation, and a chance to give back to peers and to community.
